A basic battery backup system is the simplest system configuration and a very effective setup for powering appliances during a power loss. Homeowners can take advantage of the simplicity of plugging the system into a wall outlet and using it to power critical loads without the need to tie the system into the circuit breaker panel. Appliances may be plugged into the energy generator unit on a full time basis, which allows the unit to automatically continue powering those appliances when grid power is lost.
The figure above outlines a 5KWH system powering 4 continuous loads (refrigerator, lights, laptop and TV) while demonstrating the total stored energy runtime for the system under those loads. The assumptions are 24 hours daily for the refrigerator and 8 hours daily for each of the other appliances.
